(race date estimated)Pilot Butte Freeform Challenge Race Description
Your variation on the classic Pilot Butte Challenger (PBC). Some will do the Freeform Challenge (PBFC):
- Because they couldn't attend the PBC
- As training for the real thing
- As a continuing Challenge following the PBC
- On a different trail or course more suited for them
- For many other personal reasons
The intent of the PBC was always been personal as opposed to competition. For many competition is personal and that's why the PBC embraces it and we embrace it here. It's up to you in both cases. Both the PBC and PBFC are mainly about people's health and fitness goals.
The traditional PBC is a 1-mile run/fitness walk with close to 500 foot elevation gain. For many it's a grueling uphill trail running sprint. For everyone it's an opportunity to achieve a personal record (PR). There's nothing like it anywhere. All ages and abilities are welcome (the 2016 age range was 4 thru 98). Over 80 medalists are listed eaxh year on the legendary record boards in the park. The scenic course winds its way from the base of Pilot Butte to the top along the Nature Trail. Proceeds are used to improve the park and to help at risk youth through the Heart of Oregon Corps as they work on trails in park. Shuttle service is provided for non-racers who can also purchase a VIP Spectator wristband to be included in the festivities.
The PBC is a formal event. The PBFC is not an event. It's something you do consistent with normal use of the park. We strongly encourage you to follow all park rules. The fee you pay covers costs associated with reporting your participation and results online. People will be able to follow along as you reach your goals. As the PBFC evolves, we expect to find many ways to support your efforts. This year the PBFC is priced low because we're still figuring it out. Your donations are also welcome. They primarily support the development of the PBFC and can be made on this site at any time
