$20 Raised for Lucy Robbins Welles Library
Each year, the Board of Trustees and the Library Director conduct a walk-through of the library to assess areas of greatest need. This process helps identify projects for the upcoming year, with the 2025-2026 walk-through highlighting several priorities that will be carefully considered for funding. The Trustees are committed to preserving the integrity, ambiance, and beauty of our beloved library, and funds raised from the race will be thoughtfully allocated to these projects.
As the Trustees do not have a dedicated income base, the race serves as the primary source of unrestricted funds, enabling the Board to cover significant expenses—such as projects not included in the Town’s budget. In the past, race proceeds have supported renovations to the quiet study area, the teen space, the Lienhard meeting room, the Children’s Department, monthly fees for T-Mobile hotspots, and even the purchase of land for future library expansion.
The Trustees take their fiduciary responsibilities seriously and prioritize transparency in their operations. We are proud members of Network for Good and GuideStar, which has awarded us the Gold Seal of Transparency.
Your secure, online, tax-deductible donation to the Lucy Robbins Welles Library will help ensure the ongoing vitality of this treasured institution. Please consider going the extra mile by making your donation today.
About Lucy Robbins Welles Library
The original library building, which still stands today, was made possible through a bequest from Miss Fanny A. Welles and a land donation from her sister, Mary Welles Eddy. Named in honor of Miss Welles' mother, The Lucy Robbins Welles Library opened its doors to the public in 1939.
Since then, the library has undergone several expansions and renovations. In 1960, a new wing was added to house the Children’s Room, and in 1988, a major renovation greatly expanded the library’s size. In both projects, the original building’s charm and character were preserved, blending seamlessly with the new additions. The Board of Trustees also purchased an adjacent parcel of land for a future expansion, though this has not yet been realized. Currently, part of this land serves as a parking area.
As a nonprofit organization, the Board of Trustees prioritizes its fiduciary responsibilities and transparency. The library is proud to be a member of Network for Good and GuideStar, where it has earned the Gold Seal of Transparency.
Although library services have evolved, our mission remains unchanged: to provide access to information, education, and cultural enrichment to the Newington community. The library continues to offer traditional services like print books, programs, and reference assistance, while embracing technology to meet the needs of today’s patrons. Services like downloadable eBooks, eMagazines, digital music, eReaders, Wi-Fi hotspots and a 24/7 virtual library on our website are just a few ways we are enhancing the library experience.
Through all the changes, one thing has remained constant: our dedication to excellent customer service. The Board of Trustees is committed to preserving the integrity, beauty, and welcoming atmosphere of our beloved library, ensuring that all visitors have a positive experience.
