(race date estimated)The Goliath Race Description
The Goliath Race
Events starts at 7:00 am
SWIM
The Goliath 2.4 mile swim course really is one of the safest and most spectator friendly swim courses in Utah. Still Water Lake Estates (1791 W. Still Water Drive, Syracuse Ut. 84075) provides a perfect venue to start the Goliath. Spectators can walk along a paved berm that runs the length of Still Water Lake. Swimmers are allowed to wear wetsuits and teams can have up to 3 swimmers within the swim portion of the race. Relay Teams that have more than one swimmer will have a designated relay area where they will tag the next swimmer. This year we will have the first cyclist keep the chip around his or her ankle which will start the second transition of the Race. The last swimmer must run out of the water and tag their cyclist before they can begin.
Note: Only the swimmers participating in the swim portion of the race are allowed onto the lake and beach area of Still Water Lake Estates. This is a private lake community and we want to respect the property of Still Water Lake Estates.
BIKE
The 112 mile Bike portion of the race will start from Still Water Lake Estates and wind through the farm land of Syracuse until you reach Antelope Island Causeway. The Causeway is a 7 mile stretch of a perfectly flat riding surface out to the Island. Once out on the Island the gentle rolling hills begin along with the beautiful scenery and animal life. You will most likely pass Buffalo, Antelope, deer, rabbits and other wild life while you ride and cheer on your team. The bike course will loop 2 ½ times around Antelope Island and end and run begins.
Note: After the last swimmer tags the cyclist in the swim to bike transition area (If you are doing the Triathlon solo, you are expected to have your support crew ready with your bike for transition in the transition area).
IMPORTANT: Cyclists must ride with traffic and follow all Utah Cycling laws. Bicycles are considered a vehicle and subject to the same provisions as the operator of any other vehicle. There will be traffic control volunteers at each intersection but it is still the responsibility of the participant to follow the laws of the road and use good judgement entering intersections or high traffic areas. Helmets must be worn at all times during the cycling portion of the Goliath. Drafting or following another cyclist is not allowed but unlike traditional USA triathlon rules, riding two abreast is allowed only if you do not impede traffic.
The support vehicle may not follow directly behind the athlete during the bike or run portion of the Goliath race. The support vehicle will not be allowed to block traffic or impede the route of the race at any time during the event. The support vehicle is expected to leap frog or meet their athlete at pre-designated areas for athlete aid/nutrition. All athlete exchanges will be made in the set exchange zones. A stronger athlete may skip an exchange zone but may not exchange outside of the exchange zones. See Team Options or Maps for further detail on exchange zones.
RUN
The Run is a 26.2 mile jaunt around Antelope Island. The run will start at approximately 1 mile past the Friary Point turn off. Runner one will participate in the King of the Hill Challenge. This is a 1.1 mile out and back, running up the 23% grade road, around the check point and back. The first half of the run is challenging but fun with some tough climbs and rolling hills. The second half of the run is flat and gentle on the legs to finish out The Goliath Race.
IMPORTANT: The runners will run against the flow of traffic. Antelope Island is generally not a high traffic area but some of the roads have narrow shoulders and safety is most important. The support vehicle is expected to leap frog or meet their athlete at pre-designated areas for athlete aid/nutrition. A stronger athlete may skip an exchange zone but may not exchange outside of the exchange zones. See Team Options or Maps for further detail on exchange zones.
